Panoxyl, which is a generic name for a broad range of acne treatment products, Acne Bar is an acne wash treatment primarily used for those with oily skin. The basic ingredient in this topographic gel is benzoyl peroxide which has a drying effect on the skin, helping to remove oils and dirt. The gel is the base for the bar and it can be applied directly to such areas as the face. While it is easy to use, especially in bar form, application should be limited to outbreak areas.
Pros
The main effect that works in this products favor is peroxide’s acne drying. The fact that Panoxyl is also affiliated with GlaxoSmith Kline, which is a company well known for its acne treatment products, lends it favorable credibility. Another positive is its ease of use, the soap bar style allows for better application to possible hard to reach areas. While outbreaks are more commonly on the face, a large number of acne sufferers have periodic outbreaks along their chest and arms.
Cons
While the drying off of acne is its main function, the Panoxyl Acne Bar also drys out surrounding skin heavily. Combine this with the constant use that is required for it to be effective and it can lead some with sensitive skin to painful dermatological issues. The bar shape could also hinder application to the back. It also has an odd “lightening” effect which applies to hair, skin and clothing with prolonged use. This bleaching out can ruin bedsheets, pillow cases and lightening to hair is more harsh than chlorine due to high astringency. This astringency, which increases along with the benzoyl percentage, can actually lead to a drying out of the skin so severe that it leads to the very thing it was meant to stop, extremely dry skin is one of the leading causes of acne outbreaks. Also since Panoxyl Acne Bar is a man made product the issue of allergens being present in the few ingredients other than benzoyl peroxide is a real issue to those who have a difficult time using processed products.
